About the project

In 2022, çavaria and Wel Jong joined forces to pull off a project on safe(r) environments. The goal? To explore how we can facilitate and organize more safe(r) environments for LGBTQ+ persons. While the rights of LGBTQI+ persons in Flanders have progressed significantly over the past few decades. But the well-being of the LGBTQI+ community has not improved to the same extent. Being heterosexual and cisgender is still the norm. LGBTQI+ persons also still experience very high levels of violence. This still too often leads to psychological distress for LGBTQI+ persons. Society needs to become more inclusive for LGBTQI+ persons. Wel Jong and çavaria are working together with partners in a variety of sectors to achieve that. This is in line with the Flemish Equal Opportunities Policy, which also wants to create a more inclusive society.

Safe(r) spaces or Safe(r) and Trusted Environments (VVOs) are essential to the well-being of LGBTQI+ persons. They come together to meet others, share experiences, have conversations and develop themselves. An LGBTQI+ specific safe(r) space or VVO primarily bans all forms of LGBTQI+ phobia.

Queerkaart

On this Queerkaart (Queer map), we list places, spaces, or contexts where LGBTQI+ persons report feeling safe(r). We do this thanks to input from our (LGBTQI+) community and their allies. You can look up places, give feedback, or add a place yourself.
